Don’t under-estimate the power of the media. It can destroy a life.
One example- the orchestrated outrage campaign directed at the Covington Kids. Some who watched the false coverage became irrational. Lives, even those of ALL the students at Covington, were threatened.
But for the media, it was just click bait. When word got out the story was false, they just quit reporting it. Did you see any empathy for those kids?
These journalists are confident of the power they carry:
After all, the average person sits in front of a television for approximately 34 hours a week. That’s 34 hours – and for many it’s far more- of being downloaded with beliefs and ideas from OTHERS.
Then there’s movies, advertising, smart phones, social networking…
This is supercharged manipulation. And, BTW, did you know radio was a huge factor in Hitler’s rise to power?
Meanwhile, the term NARCISSISTIC PERSONALITY DISORDER keeps being mentioned. This is the ME and ME ONLY disorder.
Increasing numbers of everyday people seem to have it.
The hallmark of NPD: Lack of empathy/conscience.
Maybe this is part of what’s happening-
James Williams- who in 2006 won Google’s highest award for developing advertising tools and products- at some point had an awakening on what he was REALLY contributing to.
Technology, he came to believe, is hijacking our minds by weakening the capacity to understand different ideas and have reasonable discourse.
Phones, he says, are now our operating systems. They keep us looking and clicking, and this constant distraction wears down will power.
But, he says, the stress of this goes much deeper than distraction.
People no longer understand what it is to CHOOSE. Their mind simply downloads what’s reported to them by their gadgets.
Maybe we could do regular SRC stress management on this - oneself and “those meant and willing to receive” - just a Wonder Click-
Because- the ability to CHOOSE would be a terrible thing to lose.
